Written in the 1960’s, this is the second newest song on the album. It's by a man called John Conolly, but when we first heard it we were sure it was very ancient, so strong and settled in its shape it feels.
It's the last song of a dying fisherman, whose gentle good night approaches swift.
Though tragic, it posits a salty Valhalla, a land beyond the trade winds, where the fisherman's aspirations are met in constant gentle joy.
Though preparing for death, it's hopeful for the adventure ahead.
We sing this when people are set on listening, it's not for loud or busy places.
lyrics
As I walked by the dockside one evening so rare,
To view the still waters and take the salt air,
I heard an old fishermen, singing this song
O take me away, boys, my time os not long.
Dress me up in my oilskins and jumper,
No more on the dock I’ll be seen,
Just tell me old shipmates I’ve gone for a trip mate,
And I’ll see you someday on fiddler’s green.
O fiddler’s green is a place I’ve heard tell,
Where the fishermen go if they don’t go to hell,
Where the weather is fair and the dolphins do play,
And the cold coast of Greenland is far far away.
Dress me up..
Where the sky’s always clear and there’s never a gale,
Where the fish jump on board with a swish of their tale,
Wher eyou’ll lie at your leisure, there’s no work to do,
And the skipper’s below making tea for the crew.
Dress me up…
When we get to the dock and the long trip is through,
There’s pubs and there’s clubs and there’s lasses there too,
Where the girls are all pretty and the beer is all free,
And there’s bottles of rum growing from every tree.
Dress…
O I don’t want a harp nor a halo not me,
Just give me a breeze on the good rolling sea,
And I’ll play me old squeeze box as we sail along,
With the wind in the rigging to sing me this song,

I usually haaaate autotune voices, but done this way it's brilliant. When enough craftsmanship is used. Hard to pick a favourite from this great album. One of my favourites of the year! soundofperpetualastonishment

Nick, grand tunes! What are you thinking of calling your next record? Best wishes, Jos
PS. You should tell that John Dipper to reform ‘Os with you. He doesn’t seem to have anything else to do. J K Parsons
